Reporting to the Working Foreman (Horticulture-Turf), the Gardener is responsible for performing horticulture related duties including:
design and layout flower beds using principles of creative design;
planting, pruning and maintaining trees, shrubs and flowers;
seeding and sodding;
monitoring disease and insect problems;
spraying of pesticides;
development and implementation of the horticultural maintenance program;
provide information to assist in the preparation of budget and tenders;
operating power and manual equipment and/or tools required to perform related duties;
provide supervision, training and guidance to staff with routine gardening maintenance;
delegation of tasks and ensuring work is being completed properly and on time;
assist with winter street tree/block pruning;
snow removal activities and forestry related duties during the winter months; and,
other duties as required and assigned.

You solve problems by identifying, gathering and processing relevant information to determine possible solutions, research options, evaluate them using your technical, numerical and analytics skills and make recommendations.
You are knowledgeable about and work in compliance with all workplace safety regulations, standards, and practices. You perform work in a safe manner and encourage and support others to do the same.
As the successful candidate, you must possess
a post-secondary school diploma in Horticulture and/or a Horticultural Apprenticeship Certificate of Qualification combined with two (2) years of directly related experience in all aspects of horticulture;
possess valid Landscape Exterminator and Industrial Vegetation Exterminator Certificates from the Ministry of the Environment;
possess a strong working knowledge of plant needs regarding conditions and fertilization;
successful candidates are required to hold and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License and qualify for the Town’s Safe Driver Program criteria with demonstrated experience operating vehicles over 11,000 kg., G.V.W.;
physically fit and capable of performing strenuous physical labour with heavy lifting in varying weather conditions.
Salary: $27.97 - $34.97 per hour
